Romans 4:1-5, 13-17
What then shall we say about Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh? 2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. 3 For what does the scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness.” 4 Now to one who works, his wages are not reckoned as a gift but as his due. 5 And to one who does not work but trusts him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is reckoned as righteousness. 13 The promise to Abraham and his descendants, that they should inherit the world, did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith. 14 If it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. 15 For the law brings wrath, but where there is no law there is no transgression.16 That is why it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his descendants—not only to the adherents of the law but also to those who share the faith of Abraham, for he is the father of us all, 17 as it is written, “I have made you the father of many nations”—in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist.
I don’t know about you, but I think I’ve noticed a reoccurring theme in the Bible. “Trust in God, your Father and Mother who loves you.” There are a few people who take offense at God being called our Mother, but in reality, God created us completely solo, with no help from a husband or wife. God is both our Mother and our Father. God created us in her image, which is both male and female. (And if you ever think that pronouns don’t matter, start calling God “she” all the time and see if anyone notices.)
There are plenty of instances in the Bible where God shows femininity.
“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings.” – Matthew 23:37
“Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you!” – Isaiah 49:15
There are many places where God gives us good advice as our only parent, as in the beginning Proverbs 2:
My child, if you receive my words,
and store up my commands inside yourself,
2 by making your ear attentive to wisdom,
and by turning your heart to understanding,
3 indeed, if you call out for discernment—
shout loudly for understanding—
4 if you seek it like silver,
and search for it like hidden treasure,
5 then you will understand how to fear the Lord,
and you will discover knowledge about God.
6 For the Lord gives wisdom,
and from his mouth comes knowledge and understanding.
7 He stores up effective counsel for the upright,
and is like a shield for those who live with integrity,
8 to guard the paths of the righteous
and to protect the way of his pIous ones.
9 Then you will understand righteousness and justice
and equity—every good way.
10 For wisdom will enter your heart,
and moral knowledge will be attractive to you.
11 Discretion will protect you,
understanding will guard you,
12 to deliver you from the way of the wicked,
from those speaking perversity,
13 who leave the upright paths
to walk on the dark ways,
14 who delight in doing evil,
they rejoice in perverse evil;
15 whose paths are morally crooked,
and who are devious in their ways.
I think that once we reach a certain age, (perhaps its 50?) we start thinking of ourselves as ADULTS. We think of ourselves as Experienced and maybe even Seasoned, Wise, and Accomplished. 2 Corinthians 4:16 tells the truth! 16 Though outwardly we are wearing out, inwardly we are renewed day by day. 17 Our suffering is light and temporary and is producing for us an eternal glory that is greater than anything we can imagine.
Sometimes, its hard to see the light when things around us feel so very dark and discouraging. Sometimes, its hard for us to see the glorious love and light of God. But in those hours its important to call out out to God, to ask for understanding and for help.
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” – Jeremiah 29:11
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” – Isaiah 41:10
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” – Romans 15:13
Even in uncertain times, we still have the love of our parent. God is always with us, and loves us no matter what. And sometimes, if we feel lost and afraid, worried about the future and what it may bring, the best thing to do is to sit in a quiet room, alone, and cry your heart out to God. God already knows your heart. He knows what you need before you even ask. She knows everything you’ve ever done, said, or thought, and loves you anyway. God wants us to grow in His way and push away the negativity and sin of the world. Jesus died for our sin, but there is still sin out there looking for you. Jesus died on the cross so you could go to be with God when your physical body fails. He opened that door and sin cannot close it. But that doesn’t mean that we won’t sin, because we all do and I think most of us realize that.
But because that door has been opened, because the heavy tapestry was torn in two when Jesus died on the cross, we have the relationship with God the He always wanted for us to have. But the sin of the world closed that door. Jesus opened it again. We know that when we die, our soul, who we truly are without this human vehicle we ride around in all day, our soul will go to be with God.
There’s a song by Phil Wichman titled “What an Awesome God” and one of the lyrics is, “Take a look at those stars, He can name them all.” Wow! If you close your eyes, can you remember a time when you were outside looking at the night sky and marveled at all the stars? Or the milky way? Its amazing! God knows the name of each of those stars. Now throw in the Aurora Borealis and the night sky can be one of the most awe-inspiring things you will ever see.
God knows the name of each of His children, don’t let anyone fool into thinking that there are any people on Earth that God doesn’t love. Even the ones who don’t believe He is real were still made in His creation. God weeps over all Her children, regardless of what name they give God. There are 8.3 BILLION people on this Earth right now, and God knows every single one of us. Each of us, all 8.3 BILLION have a spark of God in us that gave us life.
Approximately 2.6 billion are Christian. 2 billion are Muslim. 15 million are Jewish. These are the religions that came from the God of Abraham. There are approximately 1.2 Billion Hindus, and 500 million Buddhists. But a full 16% of the Earth’s population doesn’t believe in any God or Creator of any kind. That’s about 1.3 BILLION people who believe they are orphans, cut off from the love of their Holy Mother and Father by their own disbelief.
All those souls, our brothers and sisters, who don’t know who they belong to, refuse to believe. Many refuse because they don’t see any purpose. So many people who claim the Christian name do terrible things. They are not following God’s ways. They publicly sin and think they are above the law. It makes our job harder, to show the non-believers what a Christian really is, and how we love like God loves us.
“When He (Jesus) saw the crowds, he had compassion on them because they were bewildered and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. 38 Therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest-ready fields.” Matthew 9:36-38
Guess what! WE ARE THE WORKERS!! Its us!! This is our job! God tells us to go out and make disciples, but we can ONLY do that by showing the world our love! God says They will know us by our love. If we aren’t loving then we aren’t doing the work God has set before us.
Pray with me:
Holy Mother and Father, thank you for being our true parent. Thank you for giving us life and giving us all that’s necessary for us to live. Now, we need your help to find more workers. Help us to be vehicles of your love to our neighbors. Give us opportunities to show your love to others. Help us to uphold your Law and be a good example to others. Amen
